Aces of Space Design Awards 2019: Meet our jury member Sumessh Menon

Sumessh Menon, founder of Sumessh Menon Associates, shares his reasons for being on our jury and tells us what he is looking forward to in the nominations

It is always a pleasure to both watch and learn from young designers. From our end, we are also always learning about the latest design influences and technological advances in the design field, thanks to such events. For this reason itself, it is an enlightening experience for us designers too.

“I believe that creativity and individuality are what matter the most and, ultimately, that should be the driving force for all design creation.

“It is always interesting to see the creativity that flows from enthusiastic young designers when they are not bound by practical or physical constraints and rigid rules. That is the platform from where we have all begun, and it is very much an eye-opener to go back to those roots and realise how much creative freedom can inspire you!”

ABOUT SUMESSH MENON
Sumessh Menon has been called the Super Potato of India — a fitting title, indeed, considering the large number of experiential, impeccably-crafted restaurants he has created for several hospitality giants. (However, it would be correct to point out at this juncture that Menon is also equally adept at residential design.) At the start of his professional journey, when he established his firm Sumessh Menon Associates (SMA) in 2009, restaurants, he recalls, were just places to eat. But that’s changed – and how!. “Now, it’s also about the experience,” he says. So that’s exactly what he sets out to do when he designs one. If Talli Tumeric pays tribute to the richly-coloured and ubiquitous spice of Indian cuisine, 145 (Kamala Mills, Mumbai), which caters to 25-to 35-year-olds, incorporates a 60ft-long art wall and a high-energy bar that resonates with playfulness. The latter’s Andheri (W) sibling, launched recently, features a large kinetic sculpture of bicycles and human figures that can be seen through a 30ft show window. Inside, a life-sized human-body light fixture levitates above the pool table. The upcoming refurbishment of a resort on Swaraj Deep (earlier Havelock Island), Andaman Islands, is the fulfilment of Menon’s long-held dream of working in this genre. “Always aim for the cutting-edge,” is his advice to self and fellow designers.
