Presenting to you Mumbai city’s record breaking bar designs from the drawing board of Sumessh Menon Associates.
A handbag on a woman, a watch on a man and a bar in a restaurant define their style. And making some fabulous style statements recently are these bar designs that shine like jewels in the nightlife scene of Mumbai. Setting records for their heady designs, these SMA designed bars are worth raising a toast for.
Mumbai’s highest bar- Farzi Café The Modern Indian Bistro
Setting high benchmarks is the famous Farzi Café that offers a concoction of well-plated Fusionfood and an earthy vibe that comes from the generous use of wood and terracotta in the decor. However the highlight of the design is their 22 ft high bar that orchestrates the eclectic style of designer Sumessh Menon and the vernacular oomph of the restaurant.
Probably the highest bar display in the city, it is designed in a stark contrast to the terracotta patterned wall, using a backlit laser cut pattern that is seen in the staircase risers as well. The bar itself has a unique shape with two cylindrical edges and a stunning red travertine countertop adding to the exclusivity of the design.

Mumbai’s longest bar design – koko Asian Gastropus
When you’re designing a bar to present masterpieces by UK-based mixologist, Dmitri you cannot do anything short of fabulous. So Sumessh decided to do the complete opposite. He made the longest bar the city of dreams had ever seen.
It’s a pièce de résistance, a 125-foot-long island bar made from locally sourced wood. The centre of attention in the restaurant design, the bar counter is abstract, fluid and flows from one end to the other greeting everyone politely. The little crevices in the wood are filled with resin to give it a distinctive texture and you ‘have’ to see the way the light reflects on it. Itsgorgeous!
Further, the apron has a three-dimensional look, covered as it is with cement-cast blocks in different patterns. Only Sumessh can combine wood, resin and cement and make them look so good!
Lets raise a toast to this uniqueness!
Most dramatic bar at mumbai – trilogy super club
When one of the most successful nightclubs in Mumbai – Trilogy, was ready to take the nightclub experience to the next level with the brand new Trilogy Super Club 2.0, they got none other than Sumessh Menon on board. And he satiated their thirst for doing something not just unique, but something that the city has never seen before by using stunning kinetic lighting conceptualized with an Australian lighting consultant.
The sheer splendour of the constantly moving kinetic lights in pre-determined patterns leaves one spellbound. It lends the bar a groovy, psychedelic feel, bundled with ample drama. Bring on the bar drinks.

Cocktail customised bar designs- POH Progressive Oriental House
The newest buzz in town known for outrageous, scrumptious food and innovative cocktails, POH has left no stone unturned when it comes to excellence in dining. And this includes their commitment to offering the best cocktails in town. Making this possible is their bar conceptualised by Sumessh Menon and his team. The bar is designed on the Yàodiàn Bar display concept, which is basically a modern interpretation of an ancient Chinese apothecary inspired design. Here the entire back wall of the bar is lined with compact drawers of 4×4 inches that contain a diverse mixture of handpicked, indigenous and seasonal herbs and ingredients. The mechanized drawers are operated by the bar tender such as to select a random drawer and thereby use the ingredients within it to concoct one of his signature cocktails! With vintage Chinese being the theme of the design, this unique feature of the bar is worth experiencing.
And while you are there, don’t forget to try their unique collection of Japanese scotch, otherwise very difficult to source. Complimented with their exclusive bar food options, you are going to come home after this one with a smiling face.

He makes it a point to incorporate art in some or the other form in all his designs and that could be a graphic wall, a wall mural or shadow sculpture or a sculptural light. He also believes that technology is going to become a more important part of restaurant design with experiments in digital art also becoming popular.
