An urban narrative in contradiction and harmony

Duplex Apartment
With a GenZ daughter with a subtle minimalist taste and GenX parents who appreciate opulence and grandeur, the duplex apartment needed harmonising and due consideration of both sensibilities. SMA chose to build on the difference and create an interesting blend of opposition and harmony.

Duality in Craft & Materiality

In order to create the balance between subtle and opulence, SMA came up with a design strategy as opposed to a theme. The idea was to keep the material selection based on the principles of minimalism, but in terms of execution and details, maximalism was the guiding principle.

Gradient Intensity

Twin Elements cleverly combines two adjoining apartments to create a spacious three-bedroom abode. Adding to the expansive feeling is the colour palette, earthy, monochromatic but meticulously planned with a gradient effect. The variations in the same hue create pockets of intensity and calm all at once.

Wall as Art Itself

Layered, tactile wall surfaces stand as key highlight in this project. For instance the faux leather chevron wall panelling in the bedroom is inspired by the Art Deco era, with an Empire State building silhouette created out of dual-tone, non-reflective mirror mosaics on either side. In the guest room, the single-tone, fibre panel is no ordinary embossed art hidden among the floral details are in-built lights that allow the intricate motifs to glow from within.
