Gong, Bandra

Hear the Asian Soul
Out of Bandra’s busiest streets, gentle vibes like a lingering, mellow sound wave draw you into Gong, a modern Pan-Asian, fine-dining restaurant by Speciality Group. Crafted by Sumessh Menon Associates, the distinct Asian aura takes you on an imaginative journey where light and art play a captivating role. The earthy palette, infused with shades of brass and bronze, adds a sensory dimension to the dynamic. Contemporary yet warm, subtly Asian yet authentic, Gong exhibits how the right material palette and precision-based textural forms can create a fresh and inviting ambience.

If you could ‘see’ the (Asian) sound

Gong would be just the space to witness this phenomenon. The space has a visual, tactile ‘soundscape’, think, waves of reverberations and frequencies that a gong is capable of producing when played by able, soulful hands. There is a “flow” in every aspect of the space: from seating arrangements, textiles and even the ceiling design. Soft, curved forms are a dominant feature but crafted in varying scales with different materials and textures.

Where sound meets light

Blooming from within the coffered, curved ceiling, the bespoke floral lights by Oorja are a vibe of its own. Customised for Gong, the blooming chandeliers brilliantly provide a sunlit-glow which floods the space with a soft yet bright illumination. Similarly, the space features another bespoke natural fibre-based lamp by Ooorja, whose cascading, curvilinear totem form perfectly embodies the soundscape concept. Made out of lantana and banana fibres, the lamps add a touch of natural, sustainable beauty to the space.

Art that moves with the sound

A monolithic wall art frames the indoor dining space. Designed and handcrafted by ZA Works, the mural features a combination of 2D patterns as well as 3D forms, both inspired by Asian screen patterns but intentionally reimagined in an abstract context. The elements swirl in their interactions with each other, as if moved by the effects of a gong.
