Have You Visited FOO Japanese Peruvian Fusion Restaurant?
Head to Foo for a dose of Japanese-Peruvian fusion
The concept of a tapas bar has always been associated with Spanish cuisine. However, the Tham brothers (of Good Wife and Koko fame in Mumbai) are changing that perception with Foo. Standing tall next to the Hamleys store in Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel, this new stomping ground goes against the traditional concept of what an eatery located inside a mall should look like. The first thing that arrests your attention, all the way from the promenade, is the bright red signage. Then, a ride up the escalator brings you face to face with the arched glass doorway. It made me think of the mysteries hiding behind it.
And while we all grow with each project, learn new lessons and unlearn some with each milestone, each of the projects I worked on abroad taught me lessons I credit a lot of my growth. So here are some valuable lessons I learnt from being a designer on international projects.
Foo Restaurant, Mumbai | Of Cherry Blossom Trees & Burgundy Walls
The high ceiling and vast expanses of concrete floor greet you upon entering the massive space. The stylish restaurant, with its faux cherry blossom trees, is divided into various sitting areas separated by stairs and illuminated door arches with a brightly lit bar on one side. The team at Sumessh Menon Architects, helmed by Architect Sumessh Menon, has given the space a distinctive Asian look with hints of contemporary design. The subtle use of burgundy on the walls and rustic backlit arches for the main walls make the area come alive. One of the walls near the entrance, inspired by Kazari-daru—decorative sake barrels at shrines, is adorned with sake barrels. The bar is the heart of the space has rather delightful to the eyes, courtesy of its beautiful burgundy laminam tile countertop. The bar display uses wooden screen aprons that are highlighted using backlights.
Foo Restaurant, Mumbai | Bathed in Natural Light
The use of wood continues in the pod-style seating area, where the burgundy couches are highlighted against a white patterned wall, which displays rows of wooden panels with modern abstract carvings on them. The other section of the restaurant is more intimate. Separated by arched walls, this area has incorporated floral chairs and burgundy table tops. The rustic walls in this section are paired with mirrors, fitting in perfectly with the colourful furniture. The terrazzo cast flooring has an intricate metal pattern inlay that will catch your attention. But the real hero that adds to the grandeur at Foo is the ceiling of the restaurant that retained the original sawtooth roofing of the old mills. During the day, you can expect natural light from the roof and the arched windows. And once the sun sets, the custom light installations steal the show. The Abacus-style lights hang above the bar and are crafted from crushed banana paper, adding charm to the space.
