The latest design venture by Sumessh Menon Associates – POH, is a reinterpretation of Asian fine dining located in the trendy food hub of Mumbai – Kamala Mills in Lower Parel. Being the pet project of restaurateur Avik Chatterjee, the place is a beautifully rendered oriental delight in the very heart of the city. The design concept was to create a vintage Chinese space that exudes the essence of the oriental cuisine served at the space. Inspiration was derived from vintage Chinese design concepts with major influence from Shanghai and Beijing. The chosen colour palette for the oriental restaurant interiors was muted greys and rich greens that captured more of the old world oriental style and deviating from the common red shade.

Several elements of the project lend it a unique aspect and set it apart, making it one of the best restaurant interior. One such concept is the Yàodiàn Bar display, which is basically a modern interpretation of an ancient Chinese apothecary-inspired design wherein the entire back wall of the bar is lined with compact drawers of 4×4 inches that contain a diverse mixture of handpicked, indigenous and seasonal herbs and ingredients. The mechanized drawers are operated by the bartender such as to select a random drawer and thereby use the ingredients within it to concoct one of his signature cocktails.
Lighting is undoubtedly one of the key design features of restaurant design. In fact, lighting was given such prominence that an entire wall was lined in custom Chinese-inspired vintage green lanterns that added a whole new dimension to the ambiance. Pod seating areas were decorated with Japanese inspired umbrella pendant lights that displayed beautiful origami like coverings. The piece de resistance however is undoubtedly the 2 huge 14 feet long sculptural cane lights that crown the dining space with glamour.
A deep study of the uses and types of oriental materials formed the basis for the selection of materials for POH. Thus a lot of natural elements like cane and jute and raw forms of materials like siporex, concrete, etc were juxtaposed within the design canvas to capture the earthy and warm essence of oriental design. Some elements were used in the abstract form of the actual element like the bamboo design wall wherein the entire wall replicated bamboo shoots in the form of relief and inlay work alternatively thus creating an ethereal backdrop to the dining area.
